Mississippi

Caregiving in Mississippi.

Smaller, more rural, and with one of the country's lowest costs of long-term care — but also among the more conservative Medicaid programs and limited paid-leave protections. Mississippi caregiving means navigating federal-floor benefits with a thinner state-level safety net.

Three things to know right now.

01.No state estate tax, no inheritance tax.

Mississippi imposes neither a state estate tax nor an inheritance tax. The state never re-enacted an estate tax after the federal pickup credit was eliminated. For most Mississippi families, the only estate-tax exposure is the federal estate tax (~$13.99M exemption per individual in 2025) — meaning the vast majority of estates face no estate tax of any kind.

02.Mississippi Medicaid is administered by Mississippi DOM — and runs lean.

The Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM) administers the state's Medicaid program. Mississippi did not expand Medicaid under the ACA, so coverage for under-65 adults is narrow. For long-term care, the standard federal 5-year look-back applies along with strict asset limits. Mississippi's lower cost of care means the same Medicaid dollar covers more services here than in higher-cost states.

03.Federal FMLA only — no state paid family leave.

Mississippi has no state-mandated paid family leave program and no state caregiver tax credit. Working caregivers rely on federal FMLA (12 unpaid weeks, employers with 50+ employees) and whatever their employer voluntarily provides. Many Mississippi caregivers work for smaller employers exempt from FMLA — making the state one of the harder ones for the working caregiver.

How we research Mississippi-specific guidance.

Every state page is built from three sources: the state’s own statutes and regulatory filings, federal CMS and SSA documents that apply, and direct input from at least one credentialed reviewer who practices in or is licensed in that state. We re-review every state page quarterly. Mississippi was last fully reviewed on May 21, 2026 by Reviewer to be assigned.
